Yascha Mounk is a political scientist and author focused on the challenges facing liberal democracies and the rise of populism. As a Johns Hopkins University professor and senior fellow at the Council on Foreign Relations, he critically examines identity politics in modern society. His influential works include “The People vs. Democracy” and “The Identity Trap.”

In an era where identity politics reshapes global narratives, the urgent need to balance diversity with universal human values becomes clear. The melding of postmodernism, postcolonialism, and critical race theory raises a provocative question: Can embracing universal principles truly bridge our deepening societal divides? This challenge calls for a bold reimagining of our approach to social harmony and equality, urging a critical reassessment of how we navigate identity and inclusivity in a complex, interconnected world.

Prepare to discover who is masterminding the seismic shifts in identity-driven discourse, when the wave of identity politics surged reshaping societal norms, how esoteric academic concepts ignited a wildfire in sectarian ideology, what the contentious core and fiery critiques of this identity-centric dogma are, where the shockwaves of these philosophical upheavals are most profound,  whether the rise of ethno-cultural politicking is a unifying force or a divisive storm, which intellectual giants and paradigms are the architects of these doctrines, why an intense focus on identity might unravel the fabric of collective values and societal harmony and so much more…

“There were three black crows standing side by side. The crow in the center was caught and entangled in a net. The crows on either side were tugging and struggling to free the crow in the center.”

    Dear Lisa, Debra and Joseph,
This was a fabulous podcast! It brought deep insights into an issue that has been troubling me for over 20 years! I intuitively knew that the social movement toward identity politics was bound to create backlash, because it fails to acknowledge all human beings as having common struggles that draw us together in a quest for justice and the nurturance of Beloved Community. While I was at a progressive Seminary from 1998-2001, I articulated my concerns about the violence inherent in this approach, and my insights were not seen as valid and worthy of consideration. This initiated a deep existential crisis and reliving of trauma for me. I wrote my Master’s Thesis on Trauma Healing in the Process of Ministerial Formation, as I sensed that we all have some deep healing work to do if we want our social justice work to be effective.

Time has shown that my intuition was accurate, and this podcast articulates exactly what I sensed to be at the root of this conundrum! Thank you for inviting Yascha Mounk to share his research and perspective, and for weaving this sharing into a Jungian framework. I have loved your podcast for over a year now, and today is the day I am becoming a Patron. I cannot tell you how healing it has been for me to hear my intuitions validated today. Just last week I was discussing with a friend how the traumatic experience I had at Seminary was still causing me pain and self-doubt. He asked, “What do you need for healing?” You have answered that question beautifully. Blessings! Jeanne Marie

Kudos and Bravo for engaging with someone not part of the “Jungian tribe!” Particularly appreciate deconstructing language and meaning!
“Say what you mean, mean what you say” is a vast territory to explore! Thanks for introducing me/us to Yascha Mounk! Library has me on the wait list!

Hello, thanks for your work! It was mentioned in this episode that you were offering a episode, a shorter one, on integrating trauma. Not sure where to find it, is it available? I am with you on Patreon. Thanks! Trish

In the dream of the young woman who saves the man; both figures are each “one armed” in a sense. She is a powerful figure who acts with unconscious agency. She uses one arm to save the young man. The man in the water ends up with only one arm. He ended up one-armed, but because he was vulnerable. The danger is emotion. Shark in water. Boy in water. But she’s in charge. ‘I see twinning images which suggest an integrated whole in the young woman. Especially, as the figure acts with such agency. The Dreamer, and the young woman in the dream, is anxious about the alien feeling of being in an unknown place, pursuing an intended and brave goal.
