The Princess Who Changed Her Fate: How to Negotiate with Destiny

The fairy tale of the Princess Who Changed her Fate enacts what Jung tells us will happen when we remain unconscious of an inner situation: it happens outside us, as fate.

Just as the princess in the story finds her unruly “fate” tearing up cloth and smashing her generous host’s dishes, we may find that our unclaimed shadow wreaks havoc at work and in our relationships.

Yet this is a hopeful story.  The beleaguered princess is able to take the right attitude, and so find a path to changing her fate. The character of the second queen gives us a model of feminine wisdom, empathy and patient awareness – this is what is needed at a difficult moment to start the slow process of turning things around.

The princess, the third of three daughters, can also be seen to illustrate the concept of a family scapegoat, bearing the burden of her family’s dysfunction and expressing it symptomatically. As with many who suffer this way, she takes the option of a clean break, setting out on a form of the hero’s journey with gold coins sewn in the hem of her dress.

When the princess changes her fate, we’re shown the potential of deep psychological work: sitting with an ugly fate, tossing the bread back and forth, putting one foot in front of the other, until we  access some valuable information. Rather than just gaining insights into the patterns we’re living out, we’re able to shift them and create different outcomes.

Here’s the Dream We Analyze

My dream began on a shore, where I watched an ordinary grey fish suffocating on land. Another figure, a man, was also present and I watched him as he provided water until the fish recovered, and then both returned beneath the surface.  I began wading into the very clear water and felt surprised as to how comfortable the temperature was. As I looked around underwater I saw some fish but no other evidence of undersea life. I felt curious and intrigued by the fish and drawn to them. I first encountered a beautiful, round golden fish. It reminded me of the sun. I could touch it gently and in doing so I felt protective and I hoped it was not unwell. I also saw a dark, hairy, and somewhat scary fish; however, I wasn’t afraid and reached out to hold it. It felt prickly and its movements startled me slightly, but I remained interested before letting it go.  As I surfaced, a dragonfly landed on my hand and I felt its legs lock onto my skin. I felt very uncomfortable, even scared, and tried to wave it off, but it remained stuck. Eventually I brushed it away, and in doing so accidentally knocked off a portion of its tail and wing. I felt very worried I had killed it.
