Artificial Intelligence & the Psyche

The First Summit on Depth Psychology and AI. A roundtable discussion sponsored by This Jungian Life podcast.

Never before have we had a technology that performs being human so well. What might this be doing to the psyche?

People are already forming attachments to these systems, confiding in them, dreaming about them, and even rearranging their inner lives around them. Depth psychology has spent more than a century studying what goes on beneath the surface of our relationships, and it has a great deal to say about what passes between a person and a machine that appears to understand them. Thinking that includes the consequences of AI on the psyche and the unconscious belong closer to the centre of the conversation that is currently shaped by technologists and policymakers. That’s what this summit is for.

The task for psychoanalysis is to approach digital technologies without nostalgia or prejudice, and to ask seriously how these conditions shape psychic development and what it means to practice psychoanalytically when identity, desire and mourning are ever more technically mediated.

Alessandra Lemma

Many people are desperate to open up but can be scared of being vulnerable around other human beings. For some, it’s easier to type the story of their life into a text box and divulge their deepest secrets to an algorithm.

James Muldoon

AI presents as intelligent, calm, empathic, and caring—while remaining devoid of genuine feeling and accountable to no one. That profile maps uncannily onto Hervey Cleckley's 1941 clinical criteria for psychopathy. Are you unwittingly befriending one?

Aaron Balick

Just as the story of The Titanic never rests, the titanism it epitomizes never departs, resurfacing whenever technological developments and abstract systems ignore existential limits and life patterns.

Glen Slater

Imperfection, judgment, wisdom, and judicious challenge are all aspects of therapy with a human that may be difficult to replicate with AI.
