ARCHETYPES AND THE CREATIVE PROCESS: A Discussion with Third Coast Percussion

Dec 2, 2021

The creator, the hero, the explorer: these are just some of the archetypes made famous by Carl Jung that inspired the latest album from Chicago’s Grammy award-winning Third Coast Percussion. Created in collaboration with classical guitarist Sérgio Assad and composer-performer Clarice Assad, Archetypes is a sonic exploration of the human experience. Taped live at the 2021 Chicago Humanities Festival, our conversation with musicians Clarice Assad and David Skidmore features an exploration of the creative process and an interactive discussion on David’s dream. Clarice Assad is a Grammy-nominated composer, celebrated pianist, inventive vocalist, and educator. David Skidmore is a performer and Executive Director with Third Coast Percussion, a GRAMMY Award-winning percussion quartet based in Chicago.

Submarine dream: beyond the obvious plumbing of the depths versus “flying high” in an airplane, the direction of “down” rather than “up” represents the dynamic of ensoulment versus spiritual enlightenment. Down and under… the vale rather than the peak (to quote Hillman). Soul rather than spirit. Embodiment, the Lunar watery depths.

As you were discussing rebelling against the most common idea of the Lovers archetype, I was reminded of a guided visualization I once wrote. We were doing a ritual on the planets where each person spoke a guided visualization for a planet and I had Venus.

I decided to work with a myth on the goddess Inanna (because the planet is associated with her) where she goes to the underworld and has to give up something (clothes, jewelry) at each gate. Because Venus is the hottest planet, I included being overwhelmed by the heat, becoming this dry, desiccated husk. And then I turned towards Earth in the sky (we were moving inwards towards the sun) and had a waterfall come down and revive us.

Years later my friend Charlie, who’d run the ritual, gave a lecture and was discussing how deities can constellate and he used my visualization as an example, expanding it to show that one of the Orishas, Venus/Aphrodite, and Inanna all represent similar manifestations. And possibly that could be thought of as archetypes manifesting differently in different cultures.
